Winter Skin Woes

Updated: Nov 15, 2021

Jack Frost has definitely nipped at your fingers, knees, elbows, and toes! LOL

We are saying NO to the dry winter skin and HELLO to a supple and moist epidermis.

We’re gonna discuss why our skin goes through the motions during the winter and ways to keep Mr. Frost at bay.

Winter is here and we’re spending more time inside and out of the sun. As our days seem to be shorter due to the sun setting earlier. Even so, dry, flaky, and itchy skin during isn’t uncommon and can affect anyone who doesn’t have a good routine down during the season.

Skin whether it’s exposed to the elements or not can still feel the affects. Due to several reasons listed below.

  • The air gets dryer so less moisture is in the air ( less humid )

  • Take baths that are too hot, therefore drying out the skin

  • Using harsh soaps with stripping chemicals

  • Not consuming enough water

  • Change in medications

All the things listed above plus more, can contribute to dry skin and more severe cases such as eczema and dry skin patches. Which is often combined with itchiness, red patches, and bleeding if left untreated. This can be very uncomfortable, but there are measures we can take to help prevent and reduce the winter affects on our skin.

What to do to help prevent and reduce the symptoms of dry skin???

  • First, we want to stay hydrated and drink as much water as we can. Recommended amounts vary, so drink enough for your body needs.

  • Secondly, use warm water instead of extremely hot to shower and bathe in.

  • Thirdly, reduce or change to a gentler soap during the winter (especially if you notice your dryness is more severe during this season).

  • Fourth, use sunscreen when out in the elements to protect you from the sun and UV rays.

  • Lastly, apply butters and cremes to add and seal in moisture.

I am usually able to tell when I need more water when my lips begin to chap. No matter the season, if my lips start to peel, I know that I haven’t drank enough water.

At YKB, we suggest applying YKB Naturals Hair & Body Buttäh immediately after a bath/shower with minimal drying. This helps seal in and retain moisture on that outer layer of skin.

Shop our body butters and allow us to take you from ashy to classy!
